2024 Artist in Residence: Jarel Gilbert
H.E. Tarlie Francis is happy to announce that this year’s Artist in Residence is Mr. Jarel Gilbert.
Jarel Gilbert is a Visual Artist from Woodlands, St. George’s. He was born in Grenada in 1992 and has been wielding pen and pencil for as long as he can remember. Growing up surrounded by the vibrant colors and rich cultural tapestry of Grenada, art became an innate part of Jarel’s identity. He graduated from Happy Hill Secondary in 2008 and pursued jobs in architectural drawing.
Although Jarel dabbled in artistic pursuits throughout his early years, it wasn’t until 2018 that he decided to take his craft more seriously. Largely self-taught, Jarel found inspiration in historic scenes of Grenada – from the picturesque carenage to the serene landscapes.
Jarel’s connection to the local community has always been a driving force in his work. He has been profoundly inspired by the artistic heritage of Grenada and its people and believes in the power of art to evoke emotions and tell stories.
Jarel aspires to be well-known not only within Grenada’s local art scene but on a broader stage. His creations are a testament to his commitment to preserving and celebrating the cultural essence of Grenada. Each stroke of Jarel’s brush reflects his passion for capturing the spirit of the island and its people.
In his pursuit of recognition, Jarel envisions a legacy that goes beyond his own lifetime. He hopes that his art will become a source of inspiration for future generations of Grenadian artists. Through his work, he aims to contribute to the cultural identity of Grenada and make a meaningful impact on the hearts of those who experience his creations.
Jarel’s piece, will be prominently displayed on the mantle in the Ambassador’s office.
